Please join us for a holiday party, and the debut exhibition of Growing Up Nisei: A Penguin show!
Sketchpad Gallery is excited to present Growing Up Nisei, Akiyo Pham's debut exhibition of her soft sculpture dolls, created under her label My Dear Darling. Growing Up Nisei features hand crafted penguin pieces featuring the influence of Japanese and American pop culture in Akiyo's childhood. In her yearly visits to Japan and the time she spent pretending to be various characters, Akiyo found similarities between the two cultures, and those influences combine in this charming and whimsical show.
This show will coincide with our 2016 holiday party, which will feature refreshments and special gallery store sales. Please come out and celebrate the holidays with us and see this great exhibit!
Opening Reception and Holiday Party: Saturday, Dec 3 (2pm-7pm)
Show On Display: Dec 3 - Dec. 15
Akiyo is a Japanese American artist and designer in California. She graduated in 2008 with a BS in Graphic Design but soon realized that she missed the tactile nature of working with her hands. She gathered whatever old t-shirts she could find for fabric and hand-sewed her first penguin prototype eventually named Niko. By combining her love for crafting and penguins, she created My Dear Darling – a shop to share her soft sculpture dolls. Her work has since been featured in magazines such as Elle Québec and Stuffed, and has been showcased twice on the pop culture news website, Buzzfeed. She was hand-selected to participate in the group show “Plush You!” in Seattle, Washington along with some of the best talents in the industry. That experience set her ambitions higher to dedicating a whole show around Niko Darling. Her dream has always been to share and connect with other penguin-lovers and this will be her first solo exhibition.
